Our Team

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that supports your teeth. It typically starts with gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding during brushing or flossing. If gingivitis is not addressed, it can advance to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease.

Periodontitis can cause gums to pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected.  Eventually, this can lead to the destruction of the bone and tissue supporting the teeth, resulting in tooth loss.

What is gum disease and how is it caused?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth. It usually starts as gingivitis, caused by plaque buildup, and can progress to periodontitis if untreated. At our clinic near Horley and Crawley, we identify early signs through detailed clinical examinations and digital imaging. Our approach focuses on early diagnosis, effective cleaning, and education to prevent progression. With proper care, gum disease can be managed successfully, protecting both your smile and overall oral health.

Causes of Gum Disease

The primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to build up on the teeth and harden into tartar. Other contributing factors include smoking, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy), diabetes, certain medications, and genetic susceptibility. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential to remove plaque and tartar and prevent gum disease.

Common symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen, or tender gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, receding gums, loose or shifting teeth, and changes in your bite. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek professional dental care promptly.

Why does gum disease occur?

Gum disease develops when bacteria in plaque and tartar irritate the gums, leading to inflammation. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, hormonal changes, and certain health conditions can increase risk. At Horley & Gatwick Dental Centre, serving Horley and Crawley, our specialists use digital radiography and advanced cleaning techniques to remove bacterial deposits and restore gum balance. By addressing both the cause and symptoms, we prevent further tissue damage. Regular hygiene appointments and personalised guidance help keep gums healthy and resilient over time.

What are the different types of periodontal disease?

There are several forms of periodontal disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to severe periodontitis. Gingivitis causes swelling and bleeding, while periodontitis affects deeper tissues and bone. At Horley & Gatwick Dental Centre, near Horley and Crawley, our team carefully diagnoses each case to determine the most suitable treatment. We use modern tools such as periodontal lasers and 3D imaging to detect and treat disease accurately. This comprehensive, specialist approach ensures that every patient receives targeted care to protect both teeth and gums.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Common symptoms of gum disease include swollen, red, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, and gum recession. Some patients may also experience tooth sensitivity or mobility. At our Horley and Crawley clinic, we perform detailed examinations to detect these signs early. Even mild symptoms should not be ignored, as early intervention prevents progression. Our team combines gentle cleaning, non-surgical therapy, and education to manage gum health effectively. We focus on restoring both comfort and confidence in your smile.
